Torticolis Chiropractor In Marietta East Cobb GA
What Is Torticolis or Cervical Dystonia
Dr. Milan Modi is an Upper Cervical & Structural Rehabilitation Chiropractor who has helped people suffering from Torticolis. Torticolis or Cervical Dystonia (CD) is complex and complicated neurological disorder that can often times be difficult to treat. As defined by the Mayo Clinic, "Cervical dystonia, also called spasmodic torticolis - a painful condition in which your neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing your head to twist or turn to one side. Cervical dystonia can also cause your head to uncontrollably tilt forward or backward." This condition is also noticed in babies and younger children.
How Is Torticolis or Cervical Dystonia Diagnosed
CD can be officially diagnosed by your Neurologist who is a trained Medical Doctor. It is important to differentiate CD with Parkinson's Disease as they both share some similar symptoms. CD is diagnosed by visual inspection of the patient, thorough history taking, specific testing to measure muscle activity, blood markers for a differential diagnosis, and symptoms. It is better when your Neurologist has plenty of experience in Cervical Dystonia and other movement disorders.
Torticolis may also be due to an Upper Cervical misalignment. This is when the Atlas or C1 bone has structurally shifted due to an accident or some form of trauma. When this occurs, certain muscles will pull tight, causing a head tilt.
What To Do About Torticolis or Cervical Dystonia
Cervical Dystonia can make life very challenging. If it is truly CD and not acute torticolis, you will know that managing CD is difficult. There are, however, few different non-intrusive methods to help your day-to-day. These methods include:
- Instrument-based Chiropractic Care
- Neurofeedback therapy
- Tai Chi
- Listening to uplifting music
- Dancing (comfortably)
The idea behind treating CD is to keep the body in a more relaxed state due to the hyperactivity of the muscles. When the body is in a parasympathetic state, the body is at ease.
